6B: The Clash
The Clash were a punk-rock band formed in London in 1976. They were one of the first punk bands in the world.
Punk rock is a rough, aggressive, fast form of rock ‘n roll. It’s not always pretty. It’s a kind of attitude. Some say the Clash were the best punk-band ever.
Check out this video for “Tommy Gun.” Tip: Punk is best played loud.
The Clash were influenced by a lot of people, including Woody Guthrie. (Before the band was formed, the singer, Joe Strummer, was nicknamed “Woody.”) Like Woody Guthrie – and U2 and Bob Marley and others – their lyrics were about standing up for people who were overlooked.
One unique feature of the Clash is that some of their songs have a reggae beat. And they played some punk-rock versions of reggae songs. Check out this song, “Police and Thieves,” by reggae singer Junior Murvin.
Now, check out the Clash’s version. Which one do you like better?
The Clash broke all the rules for what “punk” was supposed to be. In “Rudie Can’t Fail,” they used horns. Most punk bands wouldn’t be caught dead with a horn. The Clash could care less what other people thought.
The Clash is one of the most influential bands ever. They influenced all types of music, including hip-hop. Chuck D of Public Enemy is a fan. Here’s a short video about a podcast he narrates.
Another unique trait about punk is the nervous energy. Watch and listen to “Clampdown.” They look like they’re about to jump through the roof.
