14B: Calexico
The band Calexico is based in Tucson, Arizona. This is in the hot, dry desert – near the border of Arizona and Mexico.
They’re a band of many influences, including country, jazz, and rock. But their most distinctive influence is from traditional Latin sounds – mariachi, conjunto, cumbia, and Tejano.
This song, “Crystal Frontier,” is a good example of their sound and look. Note the landscape, the horns, the architecture, and the clothing. Viva Mexico!
Calexico’s entire aesthetic is inspired by Latin America. (“Aesthetic” means the whole experience – the look, the feel, the vibe.) Take a look at some of their album covers and concert posters.
The band is also influenced by Western movies like The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Here, Calexico plays with an orchestra. Check out the music after the guitar intro. Does this sound like Ennio Morricone? Would this work in a movie?
The primary members of Calexico are John Convertino, who plays drums, and Joey Burns, who plays – are you ready? – guitar, bass, cello, piano, accordion, percussion, and vibraphone. (Not all at once!) They usually travel with a 10-piece band. Everyone plays several instruments.
Calexico also loves rock ‘n roll. Here, they take a 1960s psychedelic rock song and spice it up with Latin flavors.
Since 1996, Calexico has recorded sixteen albums. For Edge of the Sun in 2015, they went to Mexico City for inspiration. Here, listen to Joey and John talk about how the vibe of the city influenced the sound. (From 1:30-3:30)
And now, check out one of the songs from that experience. This video was made in the recording studio. Look at all the cool recording equipment, musical gear, and instruments. (Discussion: Do you think this song would be good in a movie? What kind of images come to mind?)
